US actor George Clooney has announced his help after the devastation caused by heavy rains and floods in northern Italy.

The newspaper Corriere della Sera quoted the mayor of the municipality of Laglio on Lake Como, Roberto Pozzi, in its Saturday edition.

Clooney has a house there.

Photos of Clooney with local disaster relief workers and Pozzi were featured on social media.

In the area around Lake Como, heavy rainfall since Tuesday had led to landslides and floods in many places and caused severe damage.

During the week, the community cleared mud-covered roads with heavy equipment and dug away debris.

Clooney: "It's even worse here in Laglio"

In a video broadcast by Italian television broadcaster Rai 1 on Thursday, Clooney said the situation was worse than people think.

"We were in Cernobbio with the mayor, the situation there is bad and here in Laglio it's even worse," Clooney told a TV reporter.

"It will take years and millions of dollars to fix it all."

The 60-year-old actor also gave hope: "This place has always been here, it will continue to exist and it will come back stronger and better."
