The branch prosecuted the defendant Yan Haojie for intentional homicide and arson. On the morning of March 20, 2020, defendant Yan Haojie drove his friend Pan’s black Toyota Camry to his parents-in-law’s residence at 8 o’clock, and asked his wife, the victim, Liu, for money in the bedroom on the second floor for the return of the gambling. The debt was rejected by Liu, and Yan Haojie went to the kitchen to take a fruit knife and returned to the bedroom on the second floor. He again asked Liu for money with the knife. After being refused, he stabbed Liu in the neck continuously with a knife, causing Liu to die.

In order to destroy the corpse, Yan Haojie used a lighter in the bedroom to ignite books and other items in the house and fled the scene, causing serious damage to the indoor items and building structure on the second floor of the house.

It was identified that the victim Liu was stabbed in the neck with a sharp object during his lifetime, causing the left subclavian artery to rupture, causing massive blood loss and death. He was also cremated after death; the damage to the vehicle downstairs was worth RMB 34,159.

After committing the crime, Yan Haojie, accompanied by his family, surrendered to the public security organs, and truthfully confessed the aforementioned crimes.

  The Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court held that: the defendant Yan Haojie intentionally killed a person and endangered public safety by arson. His actions constituted the crime of intentional homicide and arson.

Yan Haojie’s behavior is cruel, with low motives, serious consequences, and great personal danger. Yan Haojie’s surrender of the case is not enough to give him a lighter punishment.
