Dangerous mountain passes, overcrowded motorways, poorly paved roads: people keep killing their lives on the roads.

Some routes appear more frequently in the statistics.

The Australian insurance company Budget Direct has issued a list for every continent and almost every country, which names the most dangerous road.

For Europe, the company writes that the East “wears the unfortunate crown for most of the dangerous roads in Europe”. There were 180 accidents between Vilnius and Kaunas in Lithuania in the first six months of 2017; Road users had an accident 127 times in one year on the ring road of Riga in Estonia. The M-06 trunk road in Ukraine is also dangerous, with almost 200 deaths between 2019 and the first quarter of 2020. After Interstate 45 from Houston to Galveston in the USA, the route in Ukraine leads the global ranking. The coastal road from Malta and the A51 in Italy near Milan are also often affected in Europe.

For Germany, the insurance company names the federal highway 12. It runs for almost 440 kilometers from Lindau on Lake Constance via Munich and Passau to Philippsreut on the Czech border.

The road, which has long been referred to as the “deadline”, is said to be dangerous mainly because of the truck traffic and risky overtaking maneuvers.

The police in Bavaria spoke a few years ago that the road was inconspicuous in terms of traffic accidents.

Regarding the methodology, the insurance company writes that it has determined the most dangerous road in each country on the basis of transport ministries and transport companies.

Local media reports were also included in the data if no official figures were available.
