Emmanuel Macron promises "transparency" on nuclear power in Polynesia

Emmanuel Macron declared this Tuesday in Papeete (Wednesday morning in Paris) that France had "a debt" to French Polynesia for the nuclear tests carried out from 1966 to 1996 in the Pacific. “The nation has a debt to French Polynesia. This debt is the fact of having housed these tests in particular those between 1966 and 1974, which we absolutely cannot say that they were clean, ”declared the Head of State in a speech to Polynesian officials, in asserting that the victims of these tests should be better compensated. The Head of State, however, did not utter the word "forgiveness" which was demanded by associations of victims of these tests.

Visiting French Polynesia since Sunday, Emmanuel Macron was expected on this particularly sensitive issue of nuclear tests in the Pacific.

And it is in an informal way that Emmanuel Macron initially chose to talk about it.

He indeed stopped on Monday at the side of the road to discuss with activists of the anti-nuclear association 193, assuring that he had "heard" them.

The same evening, the president reaffirmed his wish for “truth and transparency” on this subject.
