you do not be fooled by appearances

by Tess Sharpe, published on July 1, 2021 by Editions Nathan.

From 14 years old.

Her favorite quote:

I hate the saying “what doesn't kill makes you stronger”.

This is bullshit.

Sometimes what doesn't kill you is worse.

Sometimes it's better to die.

Sometimes what doesn't kill you fools you so much that continuing to live with what you have left is a lifelong battle.

Why this book?

  • Because it's an absolutely breathtaking young adult thriller!

As three young women, Nora, his girlfriend and his ex, go to the bank to deposit the fundraising proceeds, the worst happens. Two unmasked and ultra-violent robbers who seem to have nothing to lose enter the establishment and do not hesitate to quickly open fire. What they don't know is that beneath her ordinary teenage appearances, Nora hides an extremely complicated past that may give her the keys to making it out alive.

  • Because the heroine, Nora, grew up with a con-mother

who did not hesitate to use her daughter - even if it meant putting her in danger - and the duo had many times had to change their lives and identities. This past is told to us in several fascinating interlude chapters. Today, Nora lives with her sister and has built a life she loves with close friends. However, it is still difficult for her to know who she really is. During this robbery, she will have to use her knowledge, often acquired illegally, to manipulate the robbers.

  • Because the basic pitch “3 teens, 2 robbers, who will come out alive? "

May soon look like the summary of a (bad) movie aired on children's channel ... I was initially concerned that the author is fallen in the unlikely or ridicule; like in a kind of

    Mom I missed the plane

. It was absolutely not the case! We are here facing a “badass” heroine as we find a lot in teenage literature without falling into the cliché. On the contrary, the novel was for me a very pleasant surprise from start to finish.

  • Because the themes brought here are sometimes difficult

    but always important.

Domestic violence, rape, endometriosis and homosexuality are approached without taboos or filters and always with great respect and the desire to raise awareness.

Add to that believable and endearing characters, real suspense and a plot perfectly managed from the first to the last page and you have an excellent young adult thriller that is likely to appeal to lovers of the genre!
