Indian woman killed with sticks and stuck on bridge for 'wearing jeans'

The crime took place in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India

A girl was severely beaten and died because she was "wearing jeans".

The police arrested only the grandfather, grandmother and one of the uncles, while the search is still underway for the rest of the accused, while her father did not know about the matter until late.

The crime that took place in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, turned into a public opinion issue, and provoked a wave of anger in the Indian street, killing a 17-year-old girl simply because her family refused to wear jeans, according to local media.

And the girl's mother, Shakuntala Devi Paswan, explained, according to the German "Dochi Villa" and "BBC", that it was her daughter's grandfather and uncles who attacked her using sticks after a dispute between them at home over her clothes.

The mother says that after her daughter lost consciousness after being beaten, her uncles claimed to take the girl to the hospital, refusing to take the mother with them.

"I told our relatives what happened and they went to the district hospital to look for her, but they couldn't find her," Shakuntala says.

The next morning, the mother and her family received news that the body of a girl had been found hanging from a bridge over the Gandak River. The family later confirmed that it was the body of her daughter after she lost her life.

The police charge the girl's grandfather, grandmother, uncles, aunts and cousins, as well as a motorist, with murder and destruction of evidence.

The police arrested only the grandfather, grandmother and one of the uncles, while the search for the rest of the accused is still underway.

Activists warn of the real dangers facing girls and women in some areas of India, from families killing girls' fetuses before they are born to favor males, through discrimination and neglect.

Families in villages and small neighborhoods also impose restrictions on the behaviour, movement and clothing of women and girls.
