Seven healthy reasons to have a beer
Ascensión Marcos
is president of the
International Society for Immunonutrition (ISIN)
and director of
the Immunonutrition Group
at the Institute of Science and Technology of Food and Nutrition (ICTAN) of the CSIC. His is definitely one of the most powerful names in nutrition in Spain. For this reason, seeing it as one of the signatures of an ambitious study on the
effects of beer on health,
and discovering that among its conclusions is that an intake of
up to 400 ml per day
can be beneficial for women, not it has a price. We interviewed her about this hot topic and at the same time, the most refreshing of the summer.
Dr. Marcos, according to studies such as the ambitious 'Global Burden of Disease' published in the 'Lancet', any amount of alcohol ingested is unhealthy. In fact, in 2016 drinking alcohol was the main risk factor for premature death and disability for people between the ages of 15 and 49, and its consumption is linked to one-tenth of all deaths in that demographic group. Does your study disprove these data? The harmful effects of binge drinking are well known, and you point out some of them. However, as we said in the published review, in the case of the association of low to moderate alcohol consumption by healthy adults with possible health-related benefits, the results of the available studies are not homogeneous. This lack of consensus is observed in international alcohol consumption guidelines that use different terminology and consumption thresholds. In addition, certain types of beverages, such as
Fermented
(wine, beer or cider), they have other
non-alcoholic components
that are those that could provide beneficial effects, as indicated in the scientific literature. For our part, we stick to the study of the effects of exclusive moderate consumption of beer and define what is the
maximum consumption threshold
that can be considered moderate consumption. The novelty of the study is to have established the amount of beer that we can consider a healthy consumption. Do I understand then that healthy consumption has more benefits than damages to health, despite alcoholic intake? In the review published in
Nutrients
, a journal with a high scientific impact factor, we stick to assessing the effects of beer consumption and defining what is the maximum consumption threshold of this drink, which can be considered moderate consumption in healthy adults. The conclusions of the analyzed studies suggest that moderate beer consumption (and we mean
700 ml of beer per day in the case of men
- about 28 grams of alcohol - or
400 ml of beer daily in women
- about 16 grams of alcohol-) is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events, a decreased risk of diabetes in men, and an increase in bone mineral density. Even so, we remember that in case of making this beer intake it should be
accompanied by food
and never by minors, pregnant or lactating women, people with medication contraindicated with alcohol, who are working or going to drive, in which case alcohol consumption should be zero. In fact, in these cases, an alternative can be
beer without alcohol,
which also has
positive effects on health.
The press release that they sent me with the results of their study was entitled with the hopeful title "One or two beers a day, the amount equivalent to a healthy moderate consumption, according to one study." Given that there is a relationship between risks of alcohol and body weight, do I understand that for the average of women this consumption remains in "one"? In the case of women, the amount considered moderate is a maximum of 400 ml of beer a day, which can be translated into
a third.
In addition to the
difference in weight
that generally occurs between men and women, we have a different way of metabolizing alcohol than men, so we have
greater sensitivity
to its effects and the upper limit of moderate consumption must be lower than that of men. What reason was the preparation of this review? The origin of this review has been the serious problem that the youth population is suffering, mainly in Europe and of course , in Spain. According to the
Ministry of Health, Social Policy and Equality
on its website, in Spain the percentage of young people and adolescents who drink alcohol from a very early age is very high,
generally starting around 13 years of age.
At present, alcohol is very present in the free time and in the social relationships of young people.
75.1% of adolescents aged 14-18
have
consumed alcohol
At some point in their life,
60% have
ever
gotten
drunk
and
a third have done so in the last 30 days.
Let's go back to moderate consumption. What is the greatest nutritional virtue of beer? According to the available scientific evidence, the
polyphenol
content
of beer is what makes it associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular events. In addition, beer provides other nutrients such as B vitamins, minerals and fiber. From the point of view of journalists who follow nutrition issues, it seems that in recent years there has been a permanent 'fight' between wine and beer for show which one has the greatest virtues. As you are probably familiar with both drinks, how is beer nutritionally superior to wine? Both are fermented beverages with very similar ingredients and brewing method and their
nutrients
are
very similar.
Each of them contributes some difference in their health effects, but the important thing is that, in the case of consuming them, it is done with a moderate consumption in both and, preferably, accompanied by food and a healthy diet. Do you personally like beer? What is your favorite? Yes, I like beer and I consume it regularly, always in moderation and with food. I could not tell you which is my favorite because currently there is such a variety of beers on the market that my choice depends on the moment, if it is time for the aperitif, if I am accompanying a lunch or dinner ... What I can say is that the The beer I drink usually has a
low alcohol content,
between 4 and 5 degrees,
and sometimes I also use non-alcoholic beer, especially when I'm driving.
