60 liters per square meter: Warning of heavy rain in northern Germany and parts of southern Germany

The German Weather Service (DWD) warned of locally extreme heavy rain in north and north-east Germany on Monday.

In the course of strong thunderstorms there is “severe weather potential”, the DWD announced on Monday in the short message service Twitter.

Local rainfall of 25 to 40 liters per square meter is possible, in some cases even more extreme amounts of precipitation of up to 60 liters.

According to the weather service, Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Hamburg, northern Brandenburg and a narrow strip in north-northern Lower Saxony are affected.

At the same time, the meteorologists expected severe thunderstorms with rain amounts of up to 40 liters per square meter as well as storms and hail in parts of southern Germany.

This was especially true for southern Bavaria and eastern parts of the neighboring state of Baden-Württemberg.

Heavy rain, squalls, hail and thunderstorms are to be expected, especially near the Alps, the DWD announced on Monday in Munich.

Heavy thunderstorms could also occur in parts of Franconia, predict the meteorologists.

Heavy rain up to 40 liters per square meter, hailstones up to three centimeters in diameter and gusts of wind up to 110 kilometers per hour are possible locally.

The weather should relax from late Monday evening. For the next few days, the meteorologists are currently expecting only a few showers and thunderstorms in Bavaria. On Tuesday night, the DWD expects heavy fog in the vicinity of larger bodies of water. On Wednesday there will probably only be a few strong thunderstorms in the Alps.

At the weekend, severe storms had raged, especially in Upper Bavaria - in Eglfing in the Weilheim-Schongau district, according to the police on Monday morning, a person was even killed. The 57-year-old hunter was sitting on a high seat in a forest on Sunday afternoon when, according to previous knowledge, it was knocked down by a gust of wind. Although first responders and the rescue service immediately looked after the victim, he died of his injuries at the scene of the accident.   

According to the police, a mudslide had covered a road with mud near Rosenheim. Trees had fallen and streets and cellars were flooded. In the districts of Weilheim-Schongau, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, there were a total of over 100 weather-related missions, as the fire brigade announced. Two people were reportedly slightly injured when a tree fell on their car.
