Jacobean The Way by sea: the new official route to get to Compostela
Album. These are 10 most beautiful towns on the Camino de Santiago
The Camino de Santiago, the oldest (and most visited) pilgrimage route in the world, not only has followers in Spain, but in Korean lands it has emerged as
a full-fledged imitator.
This is the
Jeju Olle,
a coastal tour inspired by ours that takes place on the island of Jeju, known as
Korean Hawaii
for its exuberant nature and relaxed atmosphere.
It has an explanation, since Koreans are great admirers of the Camino de Santiago homeland.
Not surprisingly, they appear seventh in the
ranking of nationalities
that cross it every year, so they are in luck with this
itinerary
in their own country and more than 10,000 kilometers from the original.
The signs that indicate the routes of the island of Korea.
This path that imitates that of Santiago has its own name: Jeju Olle, whose meaning is none other than
"Jeju path"
, since that is the name of the island on which it is located, with
one of the 10 most beautiful coastal routes in the world. ,
according to British travel magazine
Britain's Active Traveler magazine.
Between forests and beaches
The route runs through forests, beaches, mountains and fishing villages.
The volunteers who designed this route tried to respect the
natural environment
as much as possible
so that these trails would remember, as far as possible, the journey through the Galician roads.
One of the beaches that this route passes through.
Although the coast of Jeju Island measures only 250 km, the Jeju Olle reaches up to 425. Like the one that leads to Santiago, this path is also
divided into stages
, 26 specifically, and to guide the pilgrims, instead of the traditional yellow arrows, they follow some orange and blue signs.
In addition, the
Ganse horse dolls
that serve to guide walkers and point out tourist attractions have become the trail's souvenirs par excellence.
A credential like the Spanish one
Like the
national Compostela,
in Korea they also have their own card to seal the credentials at the end of each of the 26 stages.
"We Koreans are
great admirers of the Camino
de Santiago and this route is born from the most absolute admiration. As long as we cannot return to Galicia, Jeju Olle will surely be a very popular place for Koreans. But when we return to
normal travel
, for us it would be a real honor to meet more Spaniards on these trails ", says the ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Spain, Bahk Sahnghoon.
Jeju locals are fans of the original Camino de Santiago.
For now, the travel restrictions due to Covid-19 will mean that, on this occasion, more
national
and European
pilgrims will
arrive this summer at the
Galician
Cathedral of Santiago
.
Meanwhile, other nationalities like the Korean will have to wait a little longer until they can return to the Jacobean routes.
