“Space Jam: New Legacy” .. a raw review of the Warner Bros. catalog

picture

25 years ago, the movie Space Jam came up with a strange idea, albeit cheap, is to combine the beloved Looney Tunes cartoon characters with former player Michael Jordan in a basketball game. Two classic films at the time, the first was "Star Trek: First Contact", and the second was "Mr Holland's Ops."

But a second part was not born despite those profits, and there was an attempt with “Looney Tunes Back in Action” in 2003, under the direction of Joe Dante, but it failed. Today, after a quarter of a century, Warner comes with a second part with basketball player LeBron James in Jordan’s place, and re-run Use the same idea!

The human characters that participated in the first film were absent, but all the cartoons returned to the second, and this is a natural thing because the fame of people ages with them and does not continue with the change of generations, while the cartoon characters never grow up and are renewed by the renewal of the technology that they make.

Space Jam: A New Legacy, filled with advertisements about the characters and works of Warner Bros. Studios, everything you can imagine from DC comics to Harry Potter to Casablanca to King Kong, or anything that the viewer might not imagine appears for several seconds, as long as Warner own it.

This type of advertisement or promotion of a product through a movie script could be funny and interesting to the viewer if it is used in moderation, but in the movie it appears in your face continuously and there is no scene without it, and it reaches the point that the person may get tired of it.

In other words, it doesn't take long before you feel like you're watching a crude two-hour advertisement for the Warner Bros. catalog, rather than a movie with its own elements.

The film was written by six books, one of whom is the brother of director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther and Creed), and the latter is named in the category of the film's producers, and that means one thing.. We are facing a near-disaster, usually, the more writers there are, the more likely the text will turn into chaos.

The story takes a fictional version of LeBron James and pumps him - if you will - into a video game to join the Looney Tunes characters (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Elmer Fudd, Lua Bunny, etc.), and form a team called "The Toon Squad" against his son Dom (Cedric Joe), a video game designer, the evil AI system AIG Rhythm (Don Cheadle), and their group called "The Gun Squad".

The two teams play against each other in a basketball game, in this atmosphere friendships develop, the characters learn lessons, and the viewer gets involved in a very busy movie.

The second movie is half an hour longer than the first, and does not contain any excitement even in the match scenes. There are some entertaining moments that evoke the atmosphere of the first part. A visit to the DC complex is fun, and it includes Batman and Superman songs, and there is a “cameo” scene by Michael Jordan.

The film relies on the element of dazzling glossy special effects that illuminate its shots, and the blending of cartoon characters with the real looks much nicer and more accurate today than it was in 1996, when Robert Zemeckis' 1988 film Who Framed Roger Rabbit was the norm.

Although the film shows vitality and activity in its characters, it lacks a soul in the text itself.

The film's repeated message about the importance of the family's role in an individual's life, and the importance of following one's destiny, or respecting what each individual wants for himself, is a vulgar message and it is very difficult to accept it through the poor treatment of this film.

Director Malcolm D is known for making some low-budget comedies, but he's not the right guy for this one, especially given that Warner Studios later brought him in to direct the movie.

It's interesting to imagine what the movie would be like if it was directed by teams Phil and Lord Miller, who are known for directing Spider-Man: Into the Spider Verse, and other family animation films.

There is no consolation for the beloved Warner Bros. characters, who appeared as a kind of decoration in order to market the NBA star in the cinema, and this is not an attempt to market these characters to the 2020 generation, for example, because they are all secondary characters to human characters.

For those who want to watch cartoon characters, we recommend going back to the classic short episodes, and enjoying Mel Blanc's performance and not Jeff Bergman's voice trying to imitate the former, enjoying these characters at the height of their popularity is much better than just watching them in supporting roles, and generally inconsistent in front of James.

The film is innocent and we don't doubt that there were bad intentions, but was it necessary to appear - even for a few seconds - the killer clown Penny Wise from the 1990 movie IT and the updated version of 2017, and the gang of rapists from the 1971 movie "Oclockwork Orange"?

Yes, rapists!

Not all Warner Bros. characters are innocent, as are all other movie studios, which profit from their characters, whether good or bad, but in a family movie it is stupid to show evil characters even for a few seconds, even if the studio director shouts at the top of his voice expressing his pride in his catalog of works!

about the movie

After Warner Bros. scrapped the idea of "Space Jam 2," there was another idea for a movie called Spy Jam, with the intention of starring Jackie Chan, and when the latter refused, Warner decided to make "Looney Tunes: Back in Action."

George Lucas' company, Industrial Light and Magic, has created 2D effects for Looney Tunes characters, making it the first time the company has done this type of effect in 33 years, since it was implemented in the 1988 movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

• It doesn't take long before you feel like watching crude advertising for two hours.

• Director Malcolm D is known for making some films, but he is not the right man for this film.
