The Organization of Consumers and Users (
OCU
) has once again asked the
Ministry of Consumption
to "clarify"
which are the batches of ice cream contaminated
by the possible presence of residues of
ethylene oxide (E410
)
,
a stabilizing additive used especially in the production of these foods, after a few days ago the EU member states considered
"unsafe or suitable for consumption"
all the products that contain it and urged its withdrawal.
This has been stated by the OCU in a statement in which it recalls that, after the European alert of June 24, the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (
Aesan
), asks food companies
to remove from the marketing chain all products
"allegedly affected". In addition, the organization has once again insisted on Alberto Garzón's cabinet to "clarify" which are the batches of ice creams affected by contamination
so that consumers can also remove those ice creams from their homes
"under suspicion of containing residues of this substance."
The
use of ethylene oxide
as an active substance in plant protection products is not approved in the EU and it is a substance classified as
mutagenic, carcinogenic and toxic
for reproduction.
In addition, the OCU recalled that the stabilizers used in the manufacture of ice cream
"are also often used in other types of food, such as dairy desserts and sauces"
, and urged to check "if it has been able to reach other types of products" specifying that access to "clear and transparent" information is "one of the basic rights of the consumer".
EUROPEAN ALERT for the additive E410
The EU member states agreed a few days ago that all products made with the additive ethylene oxide (E410), mainly ice cream, should be considered as "not safe or suitable for consumption", as it is not possible to define a "safe level of exposure "for the population.
For this reason, the Aesan recognized that
"any level to which consumers may be exposed presents a potential risk"
and joined Europe's request for food operators who have commercialized these products in the EU market, under the control from the competent national authorities, remove them from the market and, where appropriate, proceed to recover them from consumers.
Since the beginning of this alert, actions to remove the contaminated additive and immobilize derivative products have already begun in Spain and, after the issuance of this common criterion by the European Commission in consensus with all EU countries, all those made from the contaminated additive are being withdrawn "immediately" from the marketing chain by the responsible food companies, according to Aesan.
