This year coincides with the tenth anniversary of the release of UNESCO's "Recommendation on Urban Historical Landscape" (hereinafter referred to as "Proposal on Urban Historical Landscape"). This side event has received the attention and support of the World Heritage Center.

  Li Qun, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and Director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, said that the protection and sustainable development of historical cities are challenges that the international community must face together in the new era. Experience, promote dialogue and cooperation between countries in the field of cultural heritage protection.

  As a historical and cultural city with a history of more than 3,000 years and a history of more than 800 years as a capital, Beijing has firmly grasped the strategic positioning of the city in recent years, fully implemented the overall urban planning, adhered to the organic connection between urban protection and renewal, and developed in the process of protection. Beijing has achieved remarkable results in promoting the overall protection of the old city based on the central axis. Based on sustainable development, it has protected the integrity of the urban historical landscape, revised the "Regulations on the Protection of Beijing's Historical and Cultural Cities", and compiled the "Beijing Central Axis Style Control Urban Design Guide "Regulations" to promote the legislative work for the protection of cultural heritage on the central axis of Beijing, and cover the scope of historical and cultural cities to the entire city.

At the same time, the people are centered, efforts are made to improve the quality of life of residents, and promote the realization of joint construction and sharing by the whole people.

  Professor Lu Zhou of the Architectural Design and Research Institute of Tsinghua University interpreted the cultural heritage value of the "Beijing Central Axis" and showed the world the useful exploration and accumulated valuable experience of Beijing in the overall protection and organic renewal of the old city.

  He said that after more than 40 years of practice, the protection of Beijing’s old city has formed its own systematic approach; the protection practice of Beijing’s old city is consistent with the principles of the urban historical landscape proposal and can reflect the protection of the old city by the urban historical landscape proposal. The guiding significance of the Beijing Central Axis in the process of applying for heritage; the principles and methods of the urban historical landscape proposal are implemented in the protection rules of the Beijing Central Axis. The application for the Beijing Central Axis will also promote Beijing’s further exploration in the protection of urban historical landscapes.

  The side event invited more than ten internationally renowned experts to share the heritage protection cases of historic cities such as Kyoto, Rome, Brasilia, and at the same time, in-depth discussions on the effective ways of historic urban landscape protection and the protection and management practices in the world heritage framework.
