Home office is mainly offered in metropolitan areas - but the potential is even greater.

In cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich or Stuttgart, over 57 percent of all employed people could work mostly or completely from home, according to an analysis published on Friday by the Institute for Applied Social Science (Infas) and the Ifo Institute.

In the north-west of Germany in particular, many home office options remain "untapped".

“The service sector is particularly well represented in the metropolitan areas.

This is the area in which you can do a lot of work from home, ”explained Ifo researcher Jean-Victor Alipour.

The analysis of home office use by Infas and Ifo is based on monthly measurements since spring 2020. It shows, especially for Berlin and Munich, that a high rate of more than 31 percent is also achieved for the surrounding districts.

Use is low at less than 21 percent in many districts of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

The nationwide share is 28.4 percent

In Munich and Frankfurt in particular, there is “above-average potential” for many of the surrounding districts, Alipour explained.

In Dresden, too, the potential is above average.

The Ifo Institute published the home office share for June on Monday;

According to surveys of companies nationwide, it was 28.4 percent last month.
