Peter R. de Vries passed away on Thursday at the age of 64.

Not only was he an important support for families such as Nicky Verstappen and Tanja Groen and he was a confidant of the key witness in the case against Ridouan T., but above all he was also a crime journalist.

NU.nl lists its most important journalistic achievements.

Book about the Heineken kidnapping

In the mid-1980s, the journalist wrote the book

De abduction of Alfred Heineken

based on interviews with Cor van Hout and Willem Holleeder, two of the Heineken kidnappers.

The book was published as agreed with Van Hout, with whom de Vries developed a friendship, only after the trial against the kidnappers had ended.

Years later, De Vries tracked down another Heineken kidnapper, Frans Meijer, in Paraguay.

Meijer had disappeared from the radar for years and appeared to have built a new life in the South American country.

The Puttense murder case and Nicky Verstappen

De Vries made more than forty broadcasts of his program

Peter R. de Vries, crime reporter

about the duo Wilco Viets and Herman du Bois that had been wrongly convicted in 1995 for the murder of Christel Ambrosius.

The two were eventually released after serving seven years in prison.

De Vries has also been committed to the murder of Nicky Verstappen in 1998 for more than twenty years. At the end of 2020, Jos B. was sentenced to twelve years in prison, but he appealed.

"I will keep working on it until the case is resolved," De Vries assured the family several times.

He also acts as a spokesperson for the family of Tanja Groen, who has been missing since 1993.

De Vries recently announced a crowdfunding campaign to raise 1 million euros.

This amount can be used to pay the tipster who can lead the police to the suspect.

Emmy Award for report on Joran van der Sloot

In 2008, De Vries received an Emmy Award, a prestigious international television prize, for the report he made about the disappearance of the American Natalee Holloway in Aruba.

"This is the price of prizes," he said at the time.

"In the past I have won nice prizes, but I want to hand them all in for this. This is the Champions League trophy, everything else is insignificant. As a simple Dutch journalist, winning such a prize is very fun."
