France is experiencing a new rebound in coronavirus contaminations.

8,875 new cases were recorded in one day, against 6,950 the day before, Public Health France said on Wednesday.

By going from single to double compared to last week when 4,442 contaminations were recorded on July 8, these data revive the fear of a 4th epidemic wave.

The government is worried about the progression of the Delta variant, which is twice as contagious.

The number of positive cases could soar to 35,000 new contaminations in early August in the absence of efforts to limit the circulation of the virus, according to recent modeling by the Institut Pasteur.

Stable hospitalizations

The positivity rate (percentage of people who tested positive out of all those who performed a test) rose to 1.3% against 0.9% a week ago.

At the same time, 7,047 Covid patients are hospitalized (including 115 new hospitalizations in 24 hours), stable data (7,076 Tuesday, 7,137 Monday).

And 931 of those patients are being treated in critical care units (including 19 new admissions in 24 hours), up from around 2,000 a month earlier.

The number of patients in critical care due to Covid fell below 1,000 last Wednesday, for the first time since September 23.

42.5% of the population fully vaccinated

Six deaths of Covid patients were recorded in hospital in 24 hours, bringing the total toll since the start of the epidemic to 111,442 (including 84,937 in hospital).

Since the start of the vaccination campaign in France, 36,417,786 people have received at least one injection (i.e. 54% of the total population) and 28,668,269 people now have a complete vaccination schedule (i.e. 42.5% of the population). total), according to the Directorate General of Health.
