JJ Abrams and Paramount have chosen the next director of the

Star Trek

franchise

on the big screen: Matt Shakman.

The filmmaker, known as the architect of the

WandaVision

series

, was recruited to revive the space adventures of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock.

If Deadline is to be believed, now that a director has been found, production of the next installment should accelerate and filming could begin next spring.

The script will be signed Lindsey Beers and Geneva Robertson-Dworet.

It will therefore be the first

Star Trek

film

written entirely by women.

It's still unclear where the story will take the main characters, or even if Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will reprise their roles.

On the rise

The news of Matt Shakman's hiring comes as the director has been nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on

WandaVision

, one of the Disney + cartoons this year.

Deadline says the filmmaker was wanted by all studios but ultimately chose

Star Trek

, after being convinced by studio manager Emma Watts, who went out of his way to get him to accept.

The latest film in the franchise,

Star Trek Beyond

, was released in 2016. In the meantime, several directors have broken their teeth trying to adapt the sci-fi universe into a new film, including Quentin Tarantino and

Fargo

creator

Noah Hawley.

However, the

Star Trek

franchise

has not been abandoned in recent years since two series have been released recently:

Star Trek: Discovery

 and

Star Trek: Picard

, in which Patrick Stewart took over the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

The actor played it during the seven seasons of

Star Trek: Next Generation

between 1987 and 1994.
