The proportional spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus has continued rapidly in Germany.

It now accounts for 74 percent of the samples examined, according to a report by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) from Wednesday evening with a view to the week up to July 4th.

In the previous weeks, the delta share had risen from 18 to 39 and then to 60 percent.

Infections with the previously predominant alpha variant, however, decreased very quickly, to around 22 percent.

Other variants of the coronavirus classified as worrying continue to play a subordinate role in Germany.

However, not all positive samples are tested for variants.

The Delta variant (B.1.617.2) discovered in India is considered to be significantly more contagious than previous forms of the virus.

In several other countries, it has massively increased the number of infections.

According to the RKI, laboratory experiments indicate, however, that those who have been completely vaccinated also have a high level of protection against the course of serious disease even with Delta.
