Canada.. tens of thousands of marine animals dead and cooked on the beach

Marine biologist Chris Harley

On the beaches of Vancouver in far western Canada, tens of thousands of mussels, starfish and snails were found dead and cooked due to the high temperatures in the region.

And the "CBC" network reported that a marine biologist at the University of British Columbia, Chris Harley, discovered what happened because of a foul smell that was emanating from Kitsilano Beach.

Canada is experiencing record high temperatures with a peak of 49.6 degrees Celsius and according to Harley, marine crustaceans in the intertidal zone can only withstand maximum temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius.

"Water quality will be temporarily affected in these areas," he added, estimating that more than a billion marine animals living along the coast of the Salish Sea in western Canada may have been killed by the heat.

"This reminds us that global warming certainly has very severe consequences not only for humans, but for all the ecosystems around us that are also subject to these changes. We don't know yet what the consequences of all these changes will be."
