• As in every tournament, the sponsor brands have redoubled their inventiveness to revisit the traditional football jersey of each team.

  • A few days before the final of Euro 2021, "20 Minutes" reviewed the striking jerseys of the competition.

As Euro 2021 draws to a close, the time has come to ask THE thorny question of competition: style. It's all well and good to strike in the top corner more than 25 meters, but if you don't have the pace to go with it, you might as well stay on the bench. And as in every tournament, the sponsor brands have therefore redoubled their inventiveness to revisit the traditional jersey and make a difference on the pitch. Models that have snapped up like hotcakes with supporters, for emotional, cultural or aesthetic reasons. Unsurprisingly, that of the Blues has not failed in its status as an indisputable bestseller of points of sale in France, and even though the team has not necessarily been there from a point of view athletic.

In the Intersport network, Portugal and Italy took 2nd and 3rd place in sales (from the start of 2021 to last week), followed by Germany and Belgium. As for Unisport, Italy took second place in the online sales podium on the French market (over the period from June 11 to July 5), followed by, surprise, Finland. Gold team of France, it represents 22% of the French sales of the distributor's Euro jerseys. “It's a trend we've seen before. Everyone loves the underdogs and during these big tournaments, there is always a nation with which the general public falls in love, ”analysis Daniel Hansen, the network's football clothing purchasing manager, in a statement. Behind the Finns, the Netherlands and Portugal completed their top 5.

But what are these swimsuits worth from a style standpoint?

Do they honor the love that supporters have for these teams?

20 Minutes

went through a few of them, starting with those of the two finalists in the competition.

Italian renaissance

The opinion of Clio Weickert (CW), self-proclaimed head of the style micro service:

“Seen from afar, the jersey has a garish side with this blue that stings the eyes like an Ikea bag.

It is much more worth a closer look, where one discovers the floral motifs inspired by the Italian Renaissance.

We welcome this subtle bias in reference to the history of art, but we regret the tone on tone which erases all the interest of the motif.

"

The opinion of Julien Laloye (JL), head of the sports department:

“Classic, not bad and we can identify it from afar.

On the other hand, the tapestry side of Bayeux is nice, but in Bayeux.

There are museums for that.

"

English sobriety

CW:

“Sober, but efficient.

At the same time having only three lions ("The three lions", the coat of arms of England), and a comma on a white jersey, it was still difficult to miss.

So yes at least we avoid the jaw-dropping patterns… But it's still a shame to play the card of simplicity for a country that does not lack eccentricities.

"

JL:

“The best recipes are always the simplest: white with as little poop as possible on it.

On the other hand, is it a swimsuit that you can wear when you are not beautiful and muscular?

Real question.

"

A half-hearted France

CW:

“The novelty?

A red band in homage to the jerseys worn by the Blues during the World Cup in 1998. And probably a little lucky charm for a double with the Euro… In short, we understand the idea but the band breaks the silhouette a bit .

As for the striped sweater, we already had a lot of supper, it might be time to renew a little.

"

JL:

"I'm wondering about this red band, from afar what do we see, firefighters in a group?

And the color is a little too bright perhaps, it looks a bit like a kéké arriving at a nightclub with his slightly old-fashioned satin shirt.

It's no for me.

"

The cleavage orange

CW:

“Big crush on the Dutch jersey!

Finally an exhilarating shade (it must be said that the color of the country helps), which makes you want to live and drink shots on the terrace (which may have harmed the team).

Without forgetting this majestic graphic lion embroidered in tone on tone which brings a real depth to the fabric.

A success.

"

JL:

“Real consistency, this little lion drawn relatively discreetly, not too Desigual, fitting in with the country's coat of arms… Now the eternal problem with Holland is the color of the jersey.

"

The Finnish outsider

CW:

“A rather simple and recognizable jersey, and a nice gradient from black to royal blue.

We would perhaps have liked a little more originality in the cross, like a motif of a starry sky, lit by a slight twilight glow ... Something a little more poetic for a change.

"

JL:

“Ok, the classic cross that we have the impression of having seen a thousand times already… An asymmetrical jersey.

Now, why is he particularly walking?

Maybe just the desire to look interesting by taking the jersey of a team that no one supports.

"

Slovak risk taking

CW:

“You have to know how to salute daring.

Certainly we remain in the range of blue a little

boring

, but with a marbled pattern, which gives a bit of the effect of a raging sea.

The final result may not be completely successful, but this jersey at least has the merit of challenging, of provoking an emotion, and this is far from being the case for everyone.

"

JL:

“Nice attempt but it's a no.

Already the patchwork of sponsors between Nike, the Fédé, the coat of arms of the country, it looks like it has been sewn up… On the other hand, for a yoga mat, why not.
