Known for his defense of a controversial treatment of Covid-19, Professor Didier Raoult spoke out in favor of the vaccination of caregivers and at-risk subjects, this Thursday, showing himself more skeptical of a generalization to the entire population.

"Yes, I am for vaccination but for a population at risk of being particularly overexposed, or at risk of developing serious forms", he said, during a lunch organized by the Franco-Chinese investor club China Business Club, in Paris.

"The individual benefit is all the more important the more you are exposed"

Asked specifically about caregivers, a category where vaccination slips, the professor of microbiology replied in the affirmative: "The caregivers who are exposed must seriously think about vaccination". In general, “the vaccine indication which does not seem to me to be questionable is when you have a risk. The individual benefit is all the more important the more you are exposed, ”he said in a question-and-answer session. Therefore, he judged "reasonable that people who, if they are exposed, can have a severe form, the elderly, the unhealthy obesity, they should be vaccinated".

He qualified "vaccines" as "a useful element in the fight against infection by Covid-19".

For the rest of the population, the specialist in infectious diseases was much more skeptical, especially for children.

"Does general vaccination help fight contagion?"

These are not elements that are clear in the literature or in real life, ”he said.

Recalling that he "said it for a year and a half", he advised any sick person to "seek treatment".

"It may look like the flu after a while"

Professor Raoult has been advocating since the start of the epidemic the use of the antimalarial hydroxychloroquine associated with the antibacterial azithromycin, a treatment on which the IHU has carried out studies, which have been disputed in their methodology (sample too small and no placebo group). In addition, several large clinical studies have concluded in recent months that hydroxychloroquine is not effective against Covid-19.

"Part of the initial disaster (in March / April 2020) is that we did not treat people, we told them: 'Wait until you suffocate', but with this virus you can have respiratory failure appalling without realizing it, ”argued the professor.

Didier Raoult estimated that “there will be a time when we will come out of it.

Based on the historical notions I have, it may look like the flu after a while ”.
