Japan to announce emergency health measures during the Olympic Games due to coronavirus

The Government of Japan has assured that it will seek to declare a state of health emergency during the Olympic Games due to the

coronavirus

, increasing the prospect of holding the fair with few, or even without, spectators.

Emergency measures to deal with the

coronavirus

include limiting the sale of alcoholic beverages and forcing restaurants to close early, softer actions than the current lockdowns in other countries.

But they would also put caps on public attendance at large events, a key issue two weeks after the opening of the Tokyo Games on July 23.

"The number of new cases continues to rise in Tokyo," Japanese minister in charge of the virus response, Yasutoshi Nishimura, said on Thursday.

Three mutations in the Spike protein of the

Epsilon variant

of the coronavirus, first detected in California, decrease the neutralizing potency of antibodies induced by vaccines or past

Covid-19

infections

, according to a study by the

University of Washington School of Medicine

(United States).

According to this work, published in the scientific journal Science, the mutations give this variant of the

coronavirus

of interest a means to totally evade the

specific

monoclonal antibodies

and reduce the effectiveness of the

antibodies in the plasma

of vaccinated people.

To better understand the characteristics of the

Epsilon variant

, the researchers tested the resistance of plasma from people exposed to the virus, as well as from vaccinated people.

The neutralizing potency of the plasma against the

Epsilon variant

in question was reduced between 2 and 3.5 times.

One of the three mutations in the

Epsilon variant

affected the receptor-binding domain on the spike glycoprotein.

This mutation reduced the neutralizing activity of 14 of the 34 domain-specific neutralizing antibodies, including antibodies in clinical phase.

The other two of the three mutations in the variant affected the N-terminal domain of the spike glycoprotein.

The researchers used mass spectrometry and structural analysis to discover that a part of the N-terminal domain of the

coronavirus

was remodeled by these mutations.

Covid antibodies last up to 12 months in 70% of recovered, according to study

Antibodies against the

coronavirus

can last up to 12 months in more than 70% of patients who have overcome

Covid

, according to a study published by Chinese researchers collected by the official media of the Asian country.

The research also concludes that

vaccination

can "effectively restrict the spread" of the coronavirus by promoting an immune response similar to the way human bodies generate human antibodies against live viruses.

The study was carried out by a subsidiary of state pharmaceutical company Sinopharm - which produces two of the

vaccines

approved by the Chinese government - and the National Research Center for Translational Medicine at Jiaotong University in Shanghai.
