The particularly contagious Delta variant has become the predominant mutant in the corona pandemic in Germany.

For the first time, it dominates with a share of 59 percent, according to the latest weekly analysis by the Robert Koch Institute on Wednesday evening with a view to the 25th calendar week (June 21-27).

It can be assumed that almost two thirds of the PCR-confirmed new corona infections are now infected with the delta variant (B.1.617.2) and only one third with the alpha mutant.

The alpha share quickly fell from 91 percent at the end of May to 33 percent at the end of June.

Other virus variants currently do not play a role in Germany.

Only some of the positive corona samples are examined for variants.

The comparison shows that the proportion of the Delta variant continues to increase sharply and has repeatedly almost doubled from 37 to 59 percent within a week, the report said.

This strong increase is accompanied by a slight increase in the number of cases and a continued low single-digit level of the 7-day incidence.

However, experts fear a trend reversal as the delta spreads. This was observed in Great Britain, among other places, in May.
