A planned homosexual? Parade in the Georgian capital Tbilisi was canceled on Monday.

The organizers were concerned about the safety of the participants.

They accused the conservative government of failing to protect them from homophobic attackers.

"We cannot go onto a street full of thugs, who are supported by the government, church leaders and pro-Russian forces, and put people's lives at risk," said a statement by the organization "Tbilisi Pride" published on Monday afternoon.

In the morning, attackers stormed the office of the LGBTQ association in the city center and attacked journalists.

At least 20 people were injured, according to media reports, including a tourist who was attacked with a knife and was hospitalized.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili had previously described the parade as "unreasonable" because clashes were to be expected.

He also claimed that the opposition, led by exiled former President Mikheil Saakashvili, was behind "Tbilisi Pride".

The parade, which had been heralded as the “March of Dignity”, should have been the first official Pride demonstration in Tbilisi. The Patriarchate of the Orthodox Church of Georgia and conservative and nationalist groups had already called for protests against the parade in advance.
