Mangzhou Island, Taishan City, Guangdong, is the only off-island with residents in Chuandao Town, with a resident population of about 200 people, about 12 nautical miles from the mainland.

Because it is far away from the land, Mangzhou Village was once the only administrative village in Taishan that could not communicate normally.

With the gradual improvement of the island’s basic communication network, Mangzhou Village has now achieved full coverage of the 4G network.

A few days ago, the reporter departed from Shanzui Port Wharf in Chuandao Town and took a boat to Mangzhou Island after more than an hour.

This small island, which is still under development, covers an area of only 6.8 square kilometers. From a distance, the entire village can be seen in a panoramic view.

On a clearing not far from the pier, I saw trees lined with trees. Some villagers were answering calls, and some were using their mobile phones to play WeChat and use Douyin.

"When the network was not established before, the signal of the mobile phone was very weak, and we couldn't even say a complete sentence when making a call. Now we can not only surf the Internet, but also watch news and TV on the mobile phone, and video chat with family members." Villager of Mangzhou Village Zhou Tianling said.

Tan Wenwei, the mayor of Chuandao Town, Taishan City, told reporters that Chuandao Town has three islands, namely Shangchuan Island, Xiachuan Island and Mangzhou Island. All the production materials on the islands must be transported from the shore.

In the 1990s, Shangchuan Island and Xiachuan Island had achieved full network coverage, and tourism development was relatively mature.

However, the communication problem has always been the "heart disease" of the villagers in Mangzhou Village.

Tan Wenwei pointed out that due to poor communications on Mangzhou Island, both daily life and the development of various industrial resources are restricted.

"The communication problem was finally solved in early April this year, which brought great convenience to the daily life of the villagers in Mangzhou Village."

It is understood that in order to solve the communication difficulties on Mangzhou Island, since 2008, China Telecom Jiangmen Taishan Branch has continued to carry out the communication infrastructure construction of the island for 13 years, organized network transformation and upgrading, and became the only operator to build a basic communication network on Mangzhou Island. .

"The villagers started to use mobile phones around 2009, but the power conditions for establishing mobile base stations are not yet available. We can only build base stations on land close to Mangzhou Island to transmit the signals, but the Internet still doesn't work. "Said Chen Yijun, general manager of China Telecom's Jiangmen Taishan branch.

In 2019, the local government established a solar photovoltaic power generation system on Mangzhou Island to solve the power problem of mobile phone base stations.

Chen Yijun pointed out that through solar photovoltaic power generation, mobile phone base station equipment can basically be supplied 24 hours a day. "We have built four mobile phone base stations on Mangzhou Island to achieve full coverage of 4G signals."

Xie Jiewei, manager of the customer service maintenance department of China Telecom’s Jiangmen Taishan branch, recalled: “The most difficult thing to build a base station on Mangzhou Island is traffic. It used to be a week to ship to Mangzhou Island. From the perspective of engineering maintenance efficiency, it’s definitely not good. We took a speedboat from Shanzui Port, and we were all wet from the wind and rain."

Xie Jiewei pointed out that in order to complete the network construction of Mangzhou Island, the expert team and the installation and maintenance personnel took speedboats to travel between Mangzhou Island and the inland many times, carrying heavy equipment, instruments and tools to the top of the base station tower for survey and construction. And commissioning.

"Next, we will open IPTV, broadband Internet access and other services for the islanders, so that the islanders can feel the convenience of intelligent information."

Nowadays, with the gradual improvement of the basic network facilities in Mangzhou Island, many young people working in other places have returned to Mangzhou Island and started their own businesses.

Tan Wenwei introduced that Mangzhou Island is rich in resources. With the help of the Internet, the sales of marine fish, honeysuckle, wild chrysanthemum, and Mangzhou camellia have increased a lot, attracting young people to return home to buy their homes.

"Because of the small output, the Mangzhou camellia produced in our village now sells for 200 yuan per catty, and sometimes others want to buy it but can't buy it. We used to sell only a few dollars per catty when there was no internet. Salted fish are also selling very well online now." said Zheng Shaoxi, secretary of the Mangzhou Village Party Committee.

In addition to selling specialty fishery and agricultural products, some villagers on Mangzhou Island have set up homestays, and there are also foreigners who invest and start businesses here.

The reporter was not far from the pier on Mangzhou Island and saw that a 2-story island-style homestay had been completed and was waiting to open.

Zhang Xinbao, deputy mayor of Chuandao Town, introduced that after the continuous improvement of the public supporting facilities in Mangzhou Island, Mangzhou Village began to have project investors for tourism development and construction.

"The tourism development project will attract more tourists to Mangzhou Island, increase the income of local villagers, and make more villagers willing to return to the island for development, thereby forming a virtuous circle and laying the foundation for the revitalization of Mangzhou Island's villages."

Li Zili, who grew up on Mangzhou Island, is a "post-90s". He returned to his hometown this year and became a "village secretary" in the village committee.

He told reporters that after studying abroad to work and live for many years, he now returns to Mangzhou Island and wants to make Mangzhou Village better and better through his own efforts.
