  • Covid-19 Israel reimposes the use of masks indoors

The pandemic has not written its last chapter.

At least in southern California, where the authorities have decided to reverse one of the main precautionary measures with respect to Covid and in full advance of the dreaded delta variant, with a greater contagion capacity.

This week the health authorities of Los Angeles County, the most populous in the country,

again recommended the use of a mask indoors, even for those vaccinated with the full schedule

.

The measure is not mandatory but it is an advice from the experts that many have immediately followed.

Images in stores, supermarkets and offices Tuesday afternoon in various parts of Los Angeles were back to caution, with covered mouths and noses.

According to the county Health Department, "in the week ending June 12,

the delta variant made up nearly half of all sequenced variants in

Los Angeles County." The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) noted that the delta variant is now responsible for about one in five new infections nationwide, compared with about one in 10 the previous week.

The announcement is a step back on California's upward trajectory in its fight against the pandemic.

It occurs just two weeks after the reopening of the country's main economy, the first to decree quarantines and closures at the national level and the last to return to normal.

It also coincides with an upturn in the number of deaths

-an average of 27 in the last 7 days- and -1,089 hospitalized at the state level-, with 41.6% of the population still unvaccinated.

Of course, of the more than 125 cases detected so far in California, only two needed hospital care and 10 corresponded to people protected by the complete vaccine schedule.

Hence the urgency of the authorities to insist on the importance of inoculating the population.

"Fully vaccinated people are well protected against serious diseases and diseases caused by worrisome variants, including the delta variant," Barbara Ferrer, county director of Public Health, said in a statement, adding: "This is a pandemic for the people. who has not been vaccinated. "

Many of them are Latino and black, at a higher rate than the white and Asian population.

It is these first two groups that have been most affected by Covid

since the beginning of the health crisis.

In the rest of the United States, the picture is similar.

Cases have fallen dramatically since the peak earlier this year, but about 300 deaths are reported nationwide each day, with more than 11,000 cases daily.

The problem remains with those who are reluctant to get vaccinated.

So far,

only 46% of Americans have received the full regimen despite having sufficient doses for the entire population

.

The risk of a rebound is still there.
