Bollywood star Aamir Khan announced on Saturday his separation from his wife, director Kiran Rao, after more than 15 years of marriage.
The famous couple released a statement saying that they had agreed to separate, but that they would raise their son together, and would continue to work on joint projects.
“In these 15 beautiful years together, we have shared a life full of experiences, joy and laughter, and our relationship has grown in trust, respect and love,” Khan and Rao added.
We are no longer husband and wife, but parents and family to each other.”
Khan and Rao met while filming a 2001 movie in which Rao was an assistant director, and they married in December 2005.
Khan, a Muslim, is known for his commitment to humanitarian and political causes.
He said in 2015 that growing "intolerance" against Muslims and intellectuals in India had prompted his Hindu wife, Rao, to consider leaving the country.
He was also working on a remake of the famous 1994 Hollywood movie "Forrest Gump", entitled "Lal Singh Chadha", which is scheduled to be released at the end of 2021.
