The Fishing Federation (FNPF) launched a campaign on Wednesday to “save our rivers”.

"The fishermen note, every day and all over France, the lack of water from which the aquatic environments suffer", warns the federation in a manifesto.

“Will we still be able to see fish swimming in our rivers in 50 years?

“Asks the FNPF, which has 1.5 million holders of a freshwater fishing license.

Rivers are in fact threatened by the consequences of human activity and intensifying periods of drought.

Too much human interference

The year 2020 has already seen the driest summer since the start of Météo-France measurements.

As summer 2021 approaches, much of France, in particular the eastern half, is threatened by another drought.

"By 2070, in particular under the effect of climate change, the flow of rivers will decrease drastically, from 15% to 40%", warns the FNPF.

Fishermen accuse the proliferation of structures (dams, mills) which break the continuity of rivers and prevent the passage of fish, especially migratory species.

They also denounce the disappearance of many wetlands, which contribute to the recharge of groundwater and serve as breeding grounds for many species, the waste of drinking water networks and withdrawals unsuitable for agricultural use in regions "too much. dry ”.

A Ministry of Water requested by fishermen

Fishermen are therefore calling for measures for “thrifty, concerted and balanced water management;

locally justified use of water storage solutions;

an ambitious and stabilized ecological continuity restoration policy [and] strong protection of wetlands ”.

They are also asking for the creation of a “Ministry of Water with dedicated resources”.

The government earlier this week put into public consultation a new decree regulating the use of water in the country, including withdrawals for agriculture.

In particular, it defines the concept of “withdrawable volume” and reinforces the role of “basin coordinating prefects” to assess the quantities available and the distribution between different uses.
