Le kite
by Laetitia Colombani, published on June 9, 2021 by Éditions Grasset.
Her favorite quote:
Keeping girls in the dark is the surest way to subjugate them, to muzzle their thoughts, their desires. By depriving them of education, they are locked in a prison from which they have no way of escaping. They are deprived of any prospect of development in society.
Why this book?
Because the kite is a nice symbol of elevation and hope.
Lena offers education to the poorest children, “a pass to another life.
More than a hope: a salvation. ”
Because Laetitia Colombani weaves the feminist story
of the lives of three extraordinary women: survivors, combatants, warriors.
Because India, far from Ayurvedic medicine and yoga, is described
with endemic poverty, "this disorder, this permanent boiling, this boiling made of movements and noises", which never offers a respite.
Because this very beautiful novel on the condition of women
is not for all that angelic;
the obstacles to the creation of a school are numerous and questions about the legitimacy of a European in wanting to change an encysted order revolve in Léna's head.
