Metoo has had a great influence on Hollywood.

This is shown by research from Harvard University in the USA.

Researchers Hong Luo and Laurina Zhang have studied 1,000 film projects linked to film producers who previously worked with Harvey Weinstein and compared them to 1,000 film projects with no known link to Weinstein.

"Important to appear good"

They have since compared gender equality among these before and after October 2017 - the month when the powerful Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein was accused of rape and sexual harassment, which was the start of the metoo movement.

It turned out that the producers with links to Weinstein hired 40 percent more female screenwriters after metoo.

Among the producers without links to Weinstein, no similar effect was seen.

- Money is central in the film and television industry and it is clear that it is important for these companies to appear representative, inclusive and good.

But I also want to believe that it has contributed to increased knowledge, that they want to do good, says the union Scen och film's chairman Simon Norrthon.

More often broke with stereotypes

Since the number of people who worked on the film projects that employed more women did not increase, according to the researchers, it can be ruled out that these were so-called "female alibis".

But the trend of more female screenwriters was clearer among film projects with female producers than in production teams that consisted only of men.

But the study has not only been able to show differences in representation, but also in terms of content.

The film projects developed by producers with Weinstein connections more often violated gender stereotypes than the film projects without Weinstein connections, according to metoo.

More sci-fi

Female screenwriters who work with Weinstein's former colleagues do drama and romance less often - who often tend to have smaller budgets than those who work with producers without known connections to Weinstein.

Instead, they do more action and sci-fi and film projects with male protagonists, who often have larger budgets and who have often had male screenwriters.

Metoo has also had an effect in the Swedish film industry.

- Yes absolutely, there is a before and after metoo.

We have not measured it yet, but we see that the issue is addressed in collations, in pre-production and when problems arise, we have a shorter starting distance, says Simon Norrthon.
