The most wanted criminal in Brazil was shot dead by the police after a three-week manhunt.

Lázaro Barbosa, wanted for the murder of a family of four, was located and surrounded by police near the city of Águas Lindas in the central Brazilian state of Goiás on Monday, the regional government announced.

The 32-year-old was seriously injured in the subsequent shooting.

Barbosa was taken to hospital and died of his injuries there, said the head of the health authorities of Goiás, Rodney Miranda.

Pictures from the Brazilian TV channels showed the bloodied Barbosa being dragged out of a black SUV by police officers and taken to an ambulance.

Almost 300 police officers were involved in the search on Barbosa.

Helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs were also used.

Barbosa is suspected of stabbing the four family members to death in a rural area 65 kilometers from Aguas Lindas in early June.

For almost three weeks, the police combed the rural areas west of the capital Brasília in search of Barbosa, who became one of the most wanted criminals in the country.

During his escape, Barbosa temporarily held three members of another family hostage.

The police also arrested a farmer who is said to have hidden the fugitive for five days.

Barbosa was jailed for robbery and rape in 2011.

In 2016 he managed to escape.

He was caught in 2018, after which he broke out of prison again.
