The coronavirus continues to mutate, creating many variants, a source of concern to the scientific community.

After notably the Alpha variant and the Delta variant, the two most famous, a new variant has just been identified in India.

This is a variant… of the Delta variant itself.

More precisely, the mutation is found on residue 417 of protein S where a lysine has given way to an asparagine, informs us Futura Sciences.

This Delta plus variant has been spotted in the states of Kerala, Mahashrata and Madhya Pradesh.

For now, Indian health authorities do not know if this variant is more contagious, more deadly, more dangerous or not.

When in doubt, India has classified this variant as “a variant of concern”.

The Delta variant is estimated to be 60% more contagious than the Alpha variant, itself between 50 and 74% more transmissible than the original strain of the virus.

In France, it represents 20% of new contaminations and becomes the majority, according to Olivier Véran.
