The fire brigade has brought a major fire near a train station under control in south London.

At least one man was injured by the fire, the fire department announced on Monday.

Around 100 firefighters were temporarily busy extinguishing the fire near the Elephant and Castle train station, which included three shops under the railway arches and several vehicles in flames.

On social media videos you could see how huge, dark billows of smoke piled up over skyscrapers, the pictures also indicated a violent explosion.

According to the PA news agency, the fire department believes that the fire could have broken out in nearby garages.

Several train connections were interrupted by the fire and the station was evacuated, and the emergency services blocked surrounding streets and an underground station.

According to initial assessments, the police did not assume that there was a terrorist-motivated act behind the incident.

In the late afternoon, the fire brigade gave the all-clear: the fire was under control.
