In Japan, a truck crashed into a group of school children, killing two of them.

As the Japanese television broadcaster NHK reported on Monday from Tokyo's neighboring province of Chiba, three other children suffered serious injuries.

First, the two deceased elementary school children were diagnosed with "cardiac arrest and respiratory arrest", a phrase often used in Japan, before the death of people is officially confirmed.

As reported by NHK, citing the police and fire brigade, the two children succumbed to their injuries.

The 60-year-old driver of the truck was arrested by the police.

According to the NHK, his truck first hit a power pole and then hit the group of elementary school students on their way home.

The narrow road near the scene of the accident is between fields.

As is often the case in rural areas of Japan, there are no sidewalks there.
