The director of the
Royal Spanish Academy
(
RAE
),
Santiago Muñoz Machado
, announced this Monday, June 21, that the institution "aspires to give certificates of the good use of Spanish" for machines in the use of artificial intelligence and "prove that the linguistic criteria are met ".
"When the
RAE
is sure that the machines use our language like a human who handles Spanish, with solvency, it aspires to give certificates of the good use of Spanish and to prove that the linguistic criteria of this house are met",
Muñoz
pointed out.
Machado
during a meeting on
Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence
at the academy headquarters.
In addition to Muñoz Machado,
Marie Mulot
, general manager of
Amazon Alexa
in Spain;
Ester Marinas
, responsible for brand and reputation of
Spain and Portugal;
David Carmona
, CEO of AI at
Microsoft Corporation
, and
Chema Alonso
, director of
Telefónica's
global Digital Consumption unit
and technical director of
LEIA
.
Those responsible for some of the main technology companies attached to the
LEIA
(Spanish Language and Artificial Intelligence) project have addressed the current state of Spanish in Artificial Intelligence.
One of the main objectives of this initiative, led by the RAE and announced in November 2019, is to regulate the language of the machines so that they speak correct Spanish.
"In the world of AI we have missed the train a bit"
"We want the AI to speak Spanish and speak it well and that the talking machines speak well and translate better and better. Spanish speakers adhere to the
RAE
criteria
in terms of lexicon or spelling, but it is more difficult for us on machines, which sometimes they don't understand us well. We want to convince those who manufacture them to use the tools of the
RAE
and speak according to the canon ", Muñoz Machado has influenced.
Over the course of a year and a half, the LEIA project has grown and the director of the
RAE himself
has remarked that it is an initiative open to other technology companies that want to participate. To date, the participants already have "all the assets" of the
RAE
(dictionary, grammar ...) to 'train' the machines in the use of Spanish.
"We also want the written language to be as perfect as possible. Perhaps in the immediate future the machines will learn to write novels and will compete with the great writers sitting in armchairs of this institution," the academic has given as an example. Precisely, he explained that last Thursday during the plenary session a demonstration was made to academics of the use of Spanish by
Amazon's
assistant
,
Alexa
.
"In the world of AI we have lost the train a bit: technology has been created in the English language for the most part, where Spanish has not had that importance, but the use of these technologies is still very high in our language and we have to demand ourselves that the level of interaction is equivalent to the importance of Spanish in the world ", has warned Chema Alonso.
Several officials have advanced some of the advances made throughout this period.
For example,
Marie Mulot
has pointed out that
Alexa
can already give definitions of the
RAE
, propose synonyms, antonyms or spell words.
"From the beginning we wanted him to speak correct and natural Spanish, we did not want him to look like a robot or speak in the infinitive", he stressed.
For her part,
Ester Marinas
has announced advances in this field in the
Android
keyboard
or in
Gmail
and
Google Docs
to improve the use and speed and corrections.
In addition, the Google assistant is already capable of giving definitions, quoting sayings or reciting poems.
"We have always wanted it to be completely natural," he added.
