Biden mourns his "dear" dog at the age of 13

US President Joe Biden announced that Champ, the eldest of the family's two dogs, passed away "peacefully at home."

The German Shepherd dog was 13 years old.

"He has been our dear constant companion for the past 13 years and has been loved by the entire Biden family," Biden and First Lady Jill Biden said in a statement posted to the president's official Twitter account.

The Bidens acquired Champ after Joe Biden became Vice President in 2008. Champ has been a companion to them in all the headquarters they have moved to since then.

"Champ shared with us our happiest moments and our saddest days, and he was sensitive to all of our unspoken feelings and emotions... We love and will always miss him," Biden said in a statement.

Biden still owns Major, a younger dog of the same breed, which the family adopted in 2018.

Biden is expected to include a cat in the White House soon.
