What about vaccination against Covid-19 in nursing homes?

Well, 81.1% of residents have received their doses of the anti-Covid vaccine, compared to only 41.9% of health professionals working in these establishments, according to new data released Thursday by Public Health France (SpF).

The health agency had stopped for several weeks to publish these indicators, the time to rework its method of calculation, because it had realized that the figures were overestimated.

Distorted vaccination rates

"Nursing home residents are not identified as such in the Covid Vaccine database", which documents the vaccination campaign in France, recalled Sophie Vaux, epidemiologist at SpF, during an online press point.

Also, any dose injected into a nursing home to a person over 65 was counted as the vaccination of a nursing home resident.

But outsiders or spouses of residents have also been able to benefit from an injection in these establishments to avoid throwing an open vial, she continued.

Certain establishments thus posted vaccination coverage rates of their residents above 100%.

87.8% of residents received "at least one dose"

Using a sample of over 300,000 nursing home residents duly identified as such by Health Insurance, SpF estimates that as of June 15, 87.8% had received “at least one dose” of vaccine and that 81.1% were "fully vaccinated".

Concerning professionals working in nursing homes or long-term care units, whose data were also overestimated for the same reasons, SpF now estimates, from a sample of “more than 100,000” of them, that 55, 3% have received at least one dose and 41.9% are fully immunized.

These figures will be updated again every day and the history reconstructed since the start of the campaign is available on the agency's data portal, Geodes, along with details by region, department, age and sex.

A call for caregivers to be vaccinated

Thursday morning, the Minister of Health Olivier Véran launched on BFMTV-RMC a "solemn appeal" to caregivers, especially in nursing homes, who have not yet been vaccinated and threatened to make compulsory vaccination for them, believing that they could "not be less vaccinated than the general population".

Since the start of the vaccination campaign in France, 59.8% of the major population has received at least one injection of the vaccine and 29.5% has received two doses, according to figures from the Ministry of Health on Thursday.

Including those who only needed a single dose because they had contracted Covid-19 previously or received the Janssen single-dose vaccine, 33.1% of the adult population received a full vaccination schedule .
