One month has passed since two elephants raised in the zoo "Ichihara Elephant Country" in Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture died, and specific bacteria were found in the intestines from the results of pathological examinations, so the cause of death is this. It turned out that there is a high possibility of bacterial enteritis.

In the "Ichihara Elephant Country" in Ichihara City, six elephants lost their appetite in the middle of last month, and two of them died on the 16th, one month after they died. In mourning the death of the elephant, the people concerned planted trees such as Kousa dogwood.

Of the remaining four sick, three have almost recovered, but one with the most severe symptoms is still ill, with intravenous drip.

At the zoo, we have been investigating the cause of death by proceeding with dissection and pathological examination of dead elephants, but since the previous examinations found a bacterium that produces toxins from intestinal tissues, this bacterium proliferated abnormally. It turns out that it is most likely due to "enteritis" that bleeds from the intestines.

This bacterium is originally found in the intestines of elephants, and in the garden, it is believed that some food caused enteritis, and we will investigate it further.

Kazuya Takenashi, a veterinarian at the zoo, said, "Since the elephant's food is also eaten by other animals, there was no problem with the food itself, but I would like to continue to investigate the detailed mechanism."

In addition, Director Sayuri Sakamoto said, "I still have a big shock, but I want to protect the remaining elephants."
