Four months after its creation, the anti-discrimination platform launched by the government in the wake of the beating of a black music producer by police officers recorded more than 5,000 calls, especially devoted to employment and housing.

Since February, this new structure, reachable at 39 28 and managed by the Defender of Rights, has received between 50 and 140 calls per day.

Of the “5,000 calls” and 1,500 online conversations recorded since the creation of the platform, issue number 1 remains employment, whether it is about discrimination in hiring, harassment or pressure at the place of employment. work, recalls Defender of Rights Claire Hédon.

According to her, "for the moment, 5% of calls concern the ethics of the security forces".

A low proportion, while the platform was thought by Emmanuel Macron as a response to the Michel Zecler affair, a black music producer assaulted by three police officers in December.

The need for "traceability of controls"

In the process, the president recognized the “unsustainable” nature of facies checks and announced the creation of this tool “so that people can denounce discrimination in a very simple, unique and national way”. The first results do not surprise the Defender of Rights. "The issue of discriminatory identity checks is complicated because the victims know that they often have no proof" and do not call, says Claire Hédon.

According to her, this underlines the need for "traceability of controls", long demanded by her institution, "so that people can lodge a complaint".

“Not yet well-known enough” to his liking, the platform nonetheless reaches a new audience who would not have thought of approaching the Defender of Rights.

About “70% of appeals” lead to the opening of a file.

If this rate is confirmed, referrals to the institution in terms of discrimination could double to reach 10,000 per year.

Some hidden discriminations

This increase shows that the establishment of a number and the dedicated site antidiscriminations.fr "is a very good idea", judges the professor of management Jean-François Amadieu. According to this academic, director of the Discrimination Observatory, "this helps to rebalance the loss of visibility of the Halde", the former High Authority for the fight against discrimination and for equality, grouped in 2011 with several other institutions under the umbrella of the Defender of Rights.

The specialist regrets, however, that the new site "obscures certain aspects of reality" by highlighting only six grounds of discrimination out of the existing twenty.

“It spins things up.

By going to this site, lots of people who are discriminated against may not know that they are, ”he said.

“The physical appearance does not appear for example, whereas it is the number one factor of mockery, in particular for obese people victims of grossophobia.
