Two small Java rhinos were spotted last March in Ujung Kulon National Park (Indonesia).

The two young people, who are said to be between three months and one year old, were filmed by cameras hidden in the park.

"Our rhino monitoring team obtained the image from the 150 cameras hidden in the peninsula," said Indonesia's director of national parks.

“This year, two little ones were spotted, and last year two more were also filmed.

A critically endangered species

Ujung Kulon Park, large of 5,100 hectares and located in the far west of the island of Java, is the last wild habitat of this species.

Births have become rare in the Java rhino, one of the world's most endangered mammals.

After years of decline, the total population of the species is estimated at 73 individuals.

The Java rhino has a horn and large folds of skin resembling armor.

These rhinos once numbered in the thousands across all of Southeast Asia to India and China.

They have been decimated by poaching and human invasion of their settlements.
