#“Dear Eve.” Back pain is due to jaw and dental problems

The Federal Association of Independent Physiotherapists said back pain may be caused by jaw problems and dental abnormalities in what is known as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, a defect that affects the masticatory muscles and the temporomandibular joint, and its effects may extend to the spine as well.

Other symptoms of this disorder include bruxism, toothache, pain in the masticatory muscles or the jaw joint, headache and tinnitus, as well as crackling sounds and limited movement of the jaw.

The association explained that temporomandibular joint dysfunction has several causes, such as wrong body posture, biting lips, nails and pens, in addition to psychological stress.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction is treated by physical therapy, and dental splints can also be used.

If the cause is psychological stress, relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation are resorted to.

If the cause is due to oral and dental problems, a dentist is used.
