The Delta variant 60% more contagious, according to British health authorities

The Delta variant, now dominant in the UK, is 60% more contagious than its predecessor in the country, according to a study released on Friday, three days after the government's decision to lift the latest restrictions was announced.

Health Minister Matt Hancock recently mentioned the figure of 40%.

According to this study by the British health authorities (Public Health England), 42,323 cases (29,892 more than a week ago) of this variant identified in India have been detected in the United Kingdom, where it represents more than 90% of new case.

Public Health England considers however "encouraging" to observe that this increase is not accompanied by an increase in hospitalizations in the same proportions.

A thousand patients with the coronavirus are currently in British hospitals.

Moscow mayor decrees a week off in the face of rising cases

The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, on Saturday declared a nonworking week to stem the spread of coronavirus in the Russian capital, in the face of a drastic increase in cases of contamination.

"This last week, the situation with the spread of the coronavirus has deteriorated markedly, the number of new contaminations having reached the peaks of last year," Sergei Sobyanin said in a statement.

Moscow recorded 6,701 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, a record for the Russian capital since last December.

More than 3.7 million deaths worldwide

The pandemic has killed more than 3,787,127 worldwide since the end of December 2019, according to an assessment established by AFP from official sources on Saturday at 10 a.m.

After the United States (599,180 dead), the countries recording the highest number of deaths are Brazil (484,235), India (367,081), Mexico (229,823) and Peru (188,100), the latter country deploring the higher death toll in relation to its population.

These figures, which are based on daily reports from national health authorities, are generally underestimated. They exclude the upward revisions carried out a posteriori by certain statistical organizations. The WHO even estimates, taking into account the excess mortality directly and indirectly linked to Covid-19, that the results of the pandemic could be two to three times higher than that officially recorded.
