Dutch Crown Princess gives up tuition allowance: I don't do much to deserve it

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said today, Friday, that Princess Amalia, the 17-year-old crown prince, decided to give up the annual government allowance of 1.6 million euros (1.9 million dollars) while studying at the university.

"I find it uncomfortable as long as I don't do much to deserve it," Amalia wrote to the prime minister, "while other students get it even harder, especially during the mysterious coronavirus period."

The Crown Princess turns 18 in December, which is the legal age in the Netherlands, which means that she will be entitled to an annual income of about 300,000 euros and an allowance of about 1.3 million euros without taxes.

Many Dutch people are angry about the amount of this allowance being paid through tax revenues, while some MPs consider the amount illogical as well.

Amalia graduated from high school on Thursday, but she has not yet revealed what field she will study at university as she plans to travel and do an internship first.
