According to a forecast, 2021 could be around 0.5 to 1.0 degrees warmer than the long-term average.

This emerges from a new so-called decadal climate forecast by the German Weather Service (DWD), which was published in Offenbach on Friday.

The DWD has recalculated for Germany, Europe and the world by how much temperature and precipitation in the years 2021 to 2030 could deviate from the long-term average for the period 1991 to 2020.

According to the DWD, the results of these climate forecasts point “in the same direction for Germany”.

A temperature increase of 0.5 to 1.0 degrees is also expected for the period 2021 to 2025.

“This trend is likely to continue in the second half of the decade,” reported the DWD.

According to the DWD, the decadal climate forecast for precipitation predicts “the bottom line is that conditions are mostly too dry”.

"In western Germany in particular, a significant decrease in precipitation is expected." The forecast quality for precipitation is, however, lower than that for temperature.
