China News Service, Kunming, June 11 (Reporter Hu Yuanhang) On the evening of the 10th, the Yunnan Seismological Bureau held a press conference on the Shuangbai magnitude 5.1 earthquake.

Fu Hong, a researcher at the Yunnan Seismological Station, said at the press conference that after the earthquake, there may be ups and downs of magnitude 4 aftershocks in the original earthquake area within a short time.

According to the official determination of China Earthquake Networks, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred in Shuangbai County (24.34 degrees north latitude, 101.91 degrees east longitude) in Chuxiong Prefecture, Yunnan Province at 19:46:07 on June 10, 2021, with a focal depth of 8 kilometers.

According to Zhang Lu, deputy director of the Office of the Yunnan Provincial Seismological Bureau, according to the local earthquake department report, preliminary statistics showed that the earthquake caused strong tremors in Shuangbai County, Xinping County, and Eshan County, Kunming City felt the earthquake, and Jianshui County and Shiping County in Honghe Prefecture. The earthquake was felt in Yun County and Linxiang District of Lincang City, Xiangyun County and Nanjian County of Dali Prefecture.

At present, no reports of casualties have been received, and other disasters are under further statistics and verification.

As of 23:00 that day, this earthquake sequence recorded a total of 3 earthquakes with a magnitude of 3.0 or more, including one with a magnitude of 5.0-5.9, 0 with a magnitude of 4.0-4.9, and 2 with a magnitude of 3.0-3.9.

According to statistics, since 1900, there have been 3 earthquakes of magnitude 5.0 or higher within 50 kilometers of the epicenter of this earthquake. The largest earthquake was the magnitude 5.7 earthquake in Hongta District, Yuxi City on February 5, 1970.

The nearest fault to the earthquake is the Chuxiong-Huannian fault, which is 15 kilometers away from the epicenter.

Is the earthquake an aftershock of the Yangbi earthquake?

Fu Hong responded that the two earthquakes that occurred in Yunnan were the result of the recent push of the Indian plate, which led to the strengthening of tectonic activity in Yunnan.

At the place where the Shuangbai magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred, the historically recorded earthquakes within 50 kilometers of the nearby area were all of the main shock-aftershock type.

According to the statistical results of historical earthquakes, follow-up earthquake judgments are made. The type of earthquake in this area is more likely to be the main shock-aftershock type.

In addition, Fu Hong also stated that the statistical results of main shock-aftershock type earthquakes show that the magnitude difference between the largest earthquake and the next major earthquake is about 1.2 on average.

Based on this, it can be judged that after the Shuangbai magnitude 5.1 earthquake, there may be ups and downs of magnitude 4 aftershocks in the original earthquake area within a short period of time.

However, Fu Hong also emphasized that with the increase in various observational data after the earthquake, they will study and judge the follow-up trend and revise the original understanding in real time.
