The US regulator announced Monday authorizing a new drug against Alzheimer's disease, characterized by progressive loss of memory and intellectual capacity, for the first time in nearly two decades.

"This clearance is significant in many ways," the US Drugs Agency (FDA) said in a statement.

The drug, named Aduhelm and produced by the pharmaceutical company Biogen, "is the first approved treatment for Alzheimer's disease since 2003," the FDA said.
