Regarding the container for storing radioactive waste generated after treating contaminated water at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, TEPCO has decided to replace some of the containers because of concerns about deterioration due to radiation. It was.

At the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the contaminated water generated after cooling the melted nuclear fuel is passed through a dedicated device to remove multiple radioactive substances.

Radioactive waste generated by precipitating with chemicals during the treatment process is stored in a special cylindrical container on the premises, and the number is currently about 3,700.

Regarding this, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission pointed out at a meeting held on the 7th that the material called polyethylene used inside the container may be deteriorated by radiation and the container may be damaged earlier than expected, leading to leakage. Did.

For this reason, TEPCO has decided to replace 31 containers, which are thought to be greatly affected by radiation, with new ones.

The work of transferring radioactive waste to a new container is scheduled to be carried out in a building with a contaminated water treatment facility after taking measures such as scattering prevention, and TEPCO plans to start full-scale operation from August.
