Anticoagulant injections, which contain the active ingredient known as heparin, are often used to prevent blood clots from forming in the veins.

Injections can also be used to dissolve already existing blood clots, but often the patient must continue to give the injection to himself at home, which requires some skill.

The director of the general medicine clinic at Hamburg / Eppendorf Hospital, German Professor Martin Scherer, explained that the main site for heparin injection is the side of the abdomen, slightly below the navel.

He added that the needle must penetrate the fatty tissue under the skin, and this is done by the patient, who uses the right hand, holding his stomach with his left hand, forming a fold in the skin, then taking the syringe with the other hand, piercing the skin fold with a small swing, then pressing the plunger and emptying the syringe, This process must go very smoothly. However, the German doctor does not recommend self-injection for very thin patients, who have no subcutaneous fat at all. When the patient doubts their ability to give the correct injection, they should continue to seek medical help. More blood drawn than an anticoagulant injection can be felt in the stomach, which is why it is not necessary to numb the skin with a local anesthetic. Heparin injections are not the only ones that prevent blood clots. Other aids include compression stockings, and movement when traveling by train or plane for a long time, for example, so it is recommended to get up a lot to move the legs.

Sports that use the leg muscles are also beneficial for patients with venous diseases, such as swimming and jogging in water.
