Head of the Pain Management Department at the Anesthesia Institute at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, Dr. Reda Tolba, stressed that chronic back pain is not a disorder, but rather a symptom of other medical problems that require detailed evaluation and need a comprehensive treatment plan to address the underlying cause of those pain. Also, avoid physical disability.

He added, "Acute back pain may result from a sudden injury to the back muscles and ligaments that support it, and then disappear after several days of care, but chronic cases need an intensive treatment plan."

Tolba explained that chronic back pain can be a cumulative response to other conditions, such as arthritis of the spine, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, herniated disc, myofascial pain, or the lifestyle of the patient.

A patient's condition can be properly diagnosed by evaluating their medical history, physical examination, and investigational examinations, such as X-rays, MRI, or CT scans, if necessary.

A range of treatment plans are available, including surgery for patients who suffer from severe back pain.

The surgical procedure is accompanied by physical therapy and a diet plan, to address the underlying problems arising from the lifestyle that patients lead.

Patients should also be educated about their comfort and safety in the work environment, and the most appropriate ways to lift heavy objects, in order to avoid injuries, and they should be assigned to perform exercises at home to strengthen them, and to help treat them from chronic lower back pain.

Tolba Satisfaction:

• “Chronic back pain can be a cumulative response to other conditions.”
