A man from Bonn died on a solo hike in the Austrian Alps.

According to the first findings of the Tyrolean police, the 65-year-old is likely to have crashed around 400 meters in altitude over snow-covered and rocky terrain.

He was discovered by a police helicopter at around 9 a.m. on Saturday in the Scharnitz area near the Bavarian border.

According to a police spokesman in Innsbruck, the hiker arrived in Scharnitz on Tuesday. When he did not return to Bonn as expected on Thursday, he was reported missing. German and Austrian emergency services were looking for him in the Karwendelspitze area. On Saturday he was finally found lifeless below a jetty and recovered by helicopter. Investigators assume that he slipped on a snowfield.
