China News Service, Hong Kong, May 31 (Reporter Zeng Ping) The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government issued a gazette on May 31 that the "Improvement of the Electoral System (Comprehensive Amendment) Ordinance 2021" was officially gazetted.
On March 11, 2021, the National People’s Congress passed the “Decision of the National People’s Congress on Improving the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s Electoral System”, which stipulated the basic principles and core elements for improving the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s electoral system, and authorized the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress to amend Hong Kong Annex I and Annex II of the Basic Law.
On March 30, 2021, the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress passed the newly revised “Annex I to the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China for the Formation of the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region” and the newly revised “Annex II of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China for the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region”. "Methods for the Formation of the Legislative Council of the Administrative Region and Voting Procedures" set out specific and clear provisions on the new democratic election system of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
On May 27, 2021, the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passed the "Improvement of the Electoral System (Comprehensive Amendment) Bill 2021", which completed the revision of relevant local election laws in Hong Kong, and detailed specific matters related to election activities.
On May 29, 2021, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Carrie Lam signed the "Improvement of the Electoral System (Comprehensive Amendment) Ordinance 2021" passed by the Legislative Council in accordance with Article 48, paragraph 3 of the Hong Kong Basic Law.
In the next 10 months, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will hold three important elections.
The general election of the Election Committee subsector is scheduled to be held on September 19, 2021, the seventh Legislative Council election is scheduled to be held on December 19, 2021, and the sixth Chief Executive election is scheduled to be held on March 27, 2022.
